Lent: Time for hugs.

«The parable of the Merciful Father.» (Lk 15,11-32)«

This design is inspired by the parable of the prodigal son, which many authors also call the parable of the merciful Father, because He is really the protagonist of this story.

Personally, this passage has always been part of my story of faith since I did some spiritual exercises in 1998 in the monastery of Santa María de Huerta, (Soria) using as basis the book «The Return of the Prodigal Son: Meditations before a Rembrandt painting» by Henri JM Nouwen (which you can find here).

Our design wants, with humility, to collect the three elements that I consider most significant in this parable (and that the book addresses in great detail):

• The son who returns with all his miseries outside and inside, represented by an human heart. This heart has some shadows, he feels ashamed for the offense that he has committed to his father but that he overcomes it to return to the Father.

• The Father who embraces and forgives all offenses in a regenerative way. The Father in the parable goes out to meet his son because he was looking forward to seeing him coming back… And not only he forgives him but also he restores the dignity of being his son (he gives him his «ring», he gives him a dress and a pair of shoes). This Father in our desing is the risen Lord, (dressed in the divine red) that embraces our heart when we come back to him with humility.

• The brother who suspects, judges and disapproves of the honesty of his brother and the generosity of his Father. He is subtly represented in the design with the exclamation marks in blue (human color) and remind us of our most selfish attitudes that makes us believe ourselves superior to others.

I think there is no more beautiful way to understand what the sacrament of confession means for a Catholic and that is why we have chosen this passage for the season of Lent, with a very clear message: «Still waiting for you» … not to punish you but to embrace you and to give you back the dignity of a Son. In this time where we are so short of hugs, take advantage and enjoy such a special hug.
