Saint Joseph’s holy year: 2021.

«The coordinator for the birth of God in our world».

We all know that Saint Joseph is the husband of the Virgin Mary and the father on earth of Jesus, but many times we forget the greatness of his mission guarding Jesus when, in his incarnation, he became small and weak.

With this design we want, from our humility, to put into value the figure of Saint Joseph by graphically collecting the three situations that drove his mission as husband of the Virgin Mary and custodian of the Son of God:

• His initial doubts of his capacity in front of the glory of God when he knew that his future wife had been chosen by God to incarnate his Son.

• The difficulties that he found of the way and its many unplanned incidents.

• • His mission to legally root Jesus in the descendants of King David to fulfill God’s promises to his people.

The design begins by showing a large question mark in blue (remember that blue is the color of humanity) that shows that the magnitude of the mission that God proposed to him as Mary’s husband probably surpassed him and he was about to give it up and «secretly repudiate» Mary.

This question reminds us that this happens to us countless times before what God asks of us. Many times we feel weak, we do not feel prepared or it is simply not as we had thought …

The second part of the design represents the roman letters of the year 2021 (MMXXI) in a walking attitude, led by Josepth who takes care of Mary and Jesus, first during pregnancy (the question mark «becomes» a pregnant woman) and then throughout his childhood.

I imagine Saint Joseph, as a craftsman as he was, somehow preparing an step by step plan for Mary’s pregnancy, but then God arrives (in red), all his plans are changed dramatically!

If I think about how nervous I was with my first child, I don’t even want to think how he could be when the one who came into the world was nothing less than the Son of God … And far from having a «quiet» pregnancy … Mary first she goes to see her cousin, then they have to travel to Bethlehem for the censur, there they have to give birth the Son of God in a manger in a stable and after that, they have to run away to Egypt to escape from Herod… Clearly, for sutre it was not the plan that Saint Joseph would have envisaged to receive the Son of God.

Finally, the last part of the design includes how God, through Joseph, fulfills the promises of his people. Matthew begins his book by showing how Joseph comes from King David’s lineage (Mt 1, 1-17) and the angel commands Joseph to name Jesus to his son. As at that time naming your son was the way to legally recognize him, with this act, Joseph legally recognizes Jesus as his Son and connects him to the family tree of King David, as Yahweh had promised to his people.

This design is finished with a rhetorical question for all of us: Mission impossible? With the im cross out in God’s red, the design remind that for God, there is nothing impossible. If He entrusts us with a mission, He will be with us to fulfill it.
