The institution of the Eucharist. (Lk 22, 19-20)
Although the Eucharist is formally set in the Holy Thursday, it is the birth of Jesus which defines for all humanity the beginning of a new relationship with God Father, who became man for us. Since then, Jesus has no longer abandoned us, having a real presence with us in the Eucharist, where the Eucharistic bread becomes his body thanks to the intercession of the priest.
At that moment of the Eucharist, where the priest raises the bread and wine and recites the formula that makes them the body and blood of Christ, I always imagine myself in the upper room with his disciples, remembering the anecdotes and miracles of his preaching as a group of friends on a special night. This moment of respectful silence allows me not only to adore him today but to systematically remember his presence in our History to change it.
There are may good books to enter into more details of the Eucharist. Let me recommend you “With burning hearts” from Henri. J. M. Nouwen (that you can find here.
This design combines these two ideas in a simple way: the round Eucharistic bread surrounded by a calendar coloured with the different liturgical colors, which reminds us that since then, the Lord is present every day.
The calendar starts on the left on white Christmas time, goes through the green of ordinary time until it reaches the purple of Lent. In Lent, it goes through the salmon pink of its fourth Sunday (Letare Sunday) to end in Holy Week and Easter time. After completing the Easter season in white, we return to the green of ordinary time until we reach Advent again, with a parenthesis in the purple with the blue of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and the salmon pink of Gaudete Sunday.
This design may have two alternatives:
- “I will be there”, which reminds us of the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Once he has come into the world at Christmas in the year 0 in Bethlehem, He no longer leaves us. If you want to find him, you know where he is waiting for you
- «364+1», which reminds us that except on Good Friday, the rest of the year, the priest transforms the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. This design is a warm wink to the anecdote that Brother Paco Cabrerizo told us in Lahorra when a woman wanted to celebrate a mass for her deceased husband precisely on Good Friday and the priest insisted that that day, mass is not celebrated (in fact, bread and wine are not really consecrated).
