The wedding in Canah.

The miracle of the intercession. (Jn 2, 1-12)

This design captures the essence of the Canah Wedding miracle where Jesus transformed water into wine thanks to the mediation of his Mother. This miracle is commonly known as the first miracle and it contains three elements worth to reflect further:

  • The fact that the Virgin Mary is aware of the need from the bride and the groom,
  • The invitation from Virgin Mary to his son to act,
  • The actitude of the servants towards Jesus.

If you would like to deepen in all the details of this miracle I can recommend you the book called “La boda de Cana”, from Alejandro Fernández Barrajón. (find it here) Just to give you a flavour, in the next two paragraphs you can find what has inspired us for our design.

The comment from Mary towards Jesus is very simple: “we don´t have more wine”. As a good mother, she is a careful observer of the needs of their friends, both in the hapiness and the sadness, and in this case, she shares its view with Jesus inviting him to take part.

“Whatever he says to you, do it” is what Mary tells the servants. Despite the first reaction to the Lord, she knows that Jesus can help this young couple and gives a simple order to the servants.

The response of the servants is also surprising: “And they made them full to the top”. Jesus had requested them to fill in the stone jars with water… when they needed wine! They could have doubted or just thought that it was useless… however, they do not only obbey Jesus, but they also fill the jars to the top, relying 100% in the word of the Lord.

The design represents one of the six stone jar from Canah, with one part filled in with water, in white and the other part already transformed in a red wine. The design has two posible layouts inside the jar:

  • A first one with the sentence “whatever he says to you, do it” that invites us to follow the advice of our mother Virgine Mary to always trust in God and its gospel, as He never fails and He always will fulfill his promises.
  • A second option, with the sentence “they made them full to the top” that reminds us that we do not only need to receive the gospel of God but also we should put our skin on the game, putting all our effort in, allowing the Lord to transform it.
